MPEG2 Playback issues @ 720p
« on: July 29, 2013, 05:31:31 PM »
I have 3 MX2 boxes, all using Confluence skin.
2 are running Android (4.2.2), one on firmware 1.1.4b and one on 1.1.2f.
I also have one running Linux (jaybob413 from the "MX2: Alpha Linux Build - 27JUL" discussion) that I have used for comparison testing.
I also have one M3 box also running Linux (static v2b).
I am using Mythbuntu 12.04.2 (MythTV tested at v25 and now at v26), along with an HDHomerun Prime. The live TV stream and recordings are MPEG2.

The results of my testing:

MX2-1.1.2f:
  • Streaming and recorded tv @ 1080 plays great
  • Streaming and recorded tv @ 720 -- viewing with the guide still showing works well. Viewing full screen, the audio slowly starts to lose sync by advancing beyond the video until finally the audio cuts in and out while the video still plays.
  • Streaming and recorded tv @ 480 plays great (though seldom used!)
MX2-1.1.4b
  • Streaming and recorded tv @ 1080 plays great
  • Streaming
and recorded tv @ 720 -- viewing within the guide view as well as full screen have the same results. The audio slowly starts to lose sync by
advancing beyond the video until finally the audio cuts in and out while
     the video still plays.
  • Streaming and recorded tv @ 480 plays great (though seldom used!)
MX2 and original G-Box Midnight Linux builds do not show any issues playing back 480, 720, and 1080 streams from MythTV (v26) in either windowed or full screen mode.
I would prefer to run on Android to allow for easier updates to XBMC in the future, but the Linux builds are very stable for me.

I have run these tests with every audio setting combo I could figure. The results are the same, even when using audio passthrough (which only one TV in my home can support). I am connecting directly to the TV via HDMI, passing audio on the HDMI as well.

This MPEG2@720p playback bug is the last hurdle I have before the G-Box solution gets the final approval for roll out in my home. (Yes, waiting for approval from the Mrs.)

Any assistance or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

That\'s kind of a cool one... I had that happen while playing some recordings from the mythtv box but assumed that it was just the commercial cut issue that I\'d seen that before with transcoded stuff. It might be a frame rate thing, since you\'re probably comparing 1080i and 480i to 720p...

MPEG2 Playback issues @ 720p

Hi,
I am experiencing the same with 720p on xbmc@Android. But, as far as I recognized, it\'s only happening if the video is using 50fps.
I saw the same thing on xbmc@ATV2, while on ATV1 running openelec, 50fps videos play fine.
So, I think, it\'s a general xbmc issue, that is fixed on linux platforms (maybe something in the ffmpeg part...but I am not technical enough to really know).
Michael

I should also mention that I have tested on my ASUS tf300t tablet running the Android port from the XBMC site, and do not see the same behavior. I haven\'t tried it on any other Android devices.

... thanks ...

Any Matricom Admins or developers have any comment? Could this be a setting I am unaware of, an XBMC bug, or perhaps an MX2 bug? I tend to believe it is the MX2 Android firmware, since I am able to run the Linux version on the MX2 with no issues. Can anyone else try to duplicate what I am seeing and confirm?

I sent an email to Matricom support when I opened this thread. I still haven\'t received a response on any front.

... thanks ...

@dwarner2311,

The official XBMC version (as found on xbmc.org) is a different version than the version for the MX2.  The official version does not use hardware acceleration, with the exception of the libstagefright alpha versions but AMLogic CPU\'s do not use libstagefright for HW acceleration.  So there is no way to make comparison between the official XBMC version and the \"Special\" version for the MX2.

There is a new update that has been released today http://matricom.net/forums/#/discussion/225/mx2-firmware-official-rc-v-1-1-5-ota-released

Please try it and see if your issue still persists.

I can\'t say I\'ve noticed the 720p issue, since I don\'t have MPEG2 content, but I wouldn\'t bank the F/W update fixing it.
There\'s no noticeable improvements in the XBMC available via OTA. (Same bugs and bloat as before) 8->

I‘m glad to see someone else is testing this. I was starting to think I was alone with this issue.

@mastafunk ... I updated all three of my MX2 boxes to the Linux port (still Alpha) and the issue does not exist.

I've recently tested on the last version of 1.1.8 as well as 1.1.9 on my MX2. I am using MythTV v26 along with the HDHomerun Prime, which outputs in an MPEG2 stream. My testing shows that watching programs broadcast in 1080 appear to play fine with no noticeable voice sync issues. This is true of both recordings and live playback. Playback at 720 has the audio outpacing the video until stuttering begins to occur. It becomes unwatchable, and can not be adjusted. Switching back to a linux port (JayBob's Gotham Beta4), both 720 and 1080 play flawlessly.

I should also point out I am using Ethernet. My network is Gigabit, though I know the MX2 only supports up to 100M.
